Eye eye...x

I don't get along with liquid eyeliner.

It's a hate/hate relationship between that fiddly little brush and that gloopy little pot and me. It's one of those things in life that I have come to accept, I just can't do it.

I was wandering about my local Boots the other day (wandering is slightly too relaxed actually, it was more of a stressed dash and grab using the double pushchair to ram Christmas shoppers out of my way...) when I stumbled across Maybelline's latest product, a professional looking gel eyeliner kit.

http://m.boots.com/mt/www.boots.com/en/Maybelline-Eye-Studio-Lasting-Drama-Gel-Liner_1190781/

Now I don't profess to be Maybelline's biggest fan. I find their products too heavy and am not a fan of the 'plastered on with a trowel' look. However, the opportunity to have lovely lined eyes without the wonkily-dragged-uneven effect did instantly appeal to me. Plus, the fact that I got a brush, a little pot and the promise of 24 hour staying power for about £8 just seemed such a bargain!!

Upon opening the little packet I was pleased to find that the pot isn't too small, there's quite a bit of product to last a while. The brush is also very good quality, with short, firm bristles to give good control.

Apprehensively, I dipped the end of the brush into the pot and started to apply.

Instantly, I was impressed. The brush gives you the ability to be precise with the amount of gel you use and the exact part of the eye that you are applying it to. It is incredibly easy to control whether you want a thin, daytime line or a thicker, more dramatic effect. It is perfect for lining the top and bottom of the eye, with different thickness lines, and it truly does last.

I found that with my wonky liquid eyeliner, it lasted a couple of hours then flaked off. With my kohl pencil it would smudge and end up half way down my face, leaving me unknowingly looking like 'Kiss' from around lunchtime onward.

This, however actually does meet it's claim to last 24 hours. (I tested this claim after a few glasses of wine, whereby even washing my face was too much effort and a face wipe before bed was an achievement to be proud of.)

The liner stayed put from application in the morning through the wine fuelled evening and into the next day. No flakiness, no smudging, no dodgy Kiss impersonations, just beautifully lined - albeit a little glazed and puffy - eyes.

So if you, like me, struggle with being cack-handed and ending up looking like your eyes are of different sizes/at totally different angles, then you should definitely give Maybelline's Lasting Drama Eye Liner Kit a go, I promise you'll be impressed!!

HD Brows

Hi lovely people! I was lucky enough on Friday to try out the new HD brow treatment and can now share my wonderful experience with you and hopefully convert some of you to HD lovers like I now am!!

HD brows is a new craze which has made it's way across the pond to the UK recently. It's an amazing procedure which achieves the most perfect looking eyebrows, shaping your face beautifully.
HD brows is basically a seven step procedure to tint, shape and define your eyebrows, highlighting your face shape and giving the appearance of perfectly shaped eyebrows.
The website for more info is:
http://www.hd-brows.co.uk/

I have very fair eyebrows, which were also very semi-circular from various over zealous plucking sprees, terrible salons and home wax attempts gone wrong over the years! I had my eyebrows tinted in the past, and professionally shaped, but the result was never quite perfect.
HD brows uses waxing, threading and tweezing to shape the brows. It also tints the fine, downy hairs beneath the brow hairs to fill in any gaps and give the appearance of perfect eyebrows. So no more invisible eyebrows for us blondies!!!

I went to a fabulous lady called Ella at her salon, Facebase, in Truro (http://www.facebasestudio.com/). It's a wonderful studio on the edge of town in the beautiful setting of the old bakery studios next to the river. Ella is wonderful, truly talented, and offers a variety of fanastic treatments. She's definitely worth a visit!  You will have an initial personal consultation and will be advised on the shape and colour to best compliment your skin tone and face shape. Then Ella sets to work, creating the most amazing results.

The treatment took about an hour and I left with perfect brows. I no longer have to tame them into shape in the morning, with my HD brows and my eyelashes tinted I can literally apply a little concealer and tinted moisturiser and that's my make up done! Perfect when my time before work is normally filled with battling a 5 year old into his uniform and convincing him that cereal is the best option for breakfast - not fish fingers...

I cannot recommend this treatment highly enough. It lasts for around 6 weeks, and treatments are between £30 - £40.

I've added a couple of pics of my new brows below, I haven't needed to apply any brow wax/pencil whatsoever to achieve the shape or colour, it's all the HD treatment.

I'm a convert, and would definitely recommend you try it at least once. You won't believe the difference it makes.

Perfect Pins xx

It's all getting rather festive out there now!! I've noticed an influx of sequins, glitter and all things sparkly gleaming and shining at me from various window displays!

I don't know about you, but for me Christmas is a time for donning my glitteriest, cutest party outfits, teetering about on ridiculous shoes and freezing various body parts off all in the name of yuletide fun!
Of course, prior to this there is a certain amount of preparation work to be done. My skin, if left to deteriorate into it's natural state over the winter period, would rival that of the uncooked turkey in my freezer.

So with this in mind, today I'm thinking about legs (mine, not the turkey's!).

The first, and most obvious choice, would be to go with tights. This saves any hassle of waxing, shaving, or (god forbid) epilating prior to donning our paper hats for a glass or two of Buck's Fizz. There are some pretty amazing options out there at the moment, with my all time favourite being some rather cute heart print suspender tights, available from various stores. My two faves are currently the ASOS version: http://www.asos.com/ASOS/ASOS-Heart-Suspender-Sheer-Tights/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=1011390&r=2 and the Lipsy version which look a little more like knee-highs rather than suspenders: http://www.next.co.uk/gl9234s9#l13703gl9 .

The 1940s/1950s are also having a bit of a moment, with a burlesque influence on a lot of today's fashion, so a decent pair a seamed tights won't go amiss this season. Try these Pamela Mann tights for a sexy seamed look: http://www.tightsplease.co.uk/brands/pamela-mann/big-bow-back-seam/ .

If you want to brave the cold and get your legs out, then there is some serious preparation work to be done. A tan is a MUST, grey/blue skin is not a good look. If money is no object when it comes to looking good, most decent spas worth their salt will currently be offering full body / lower body massages, to get the skin into peak condition. You can then opt for a wax, pedicure and a spray tan to complete the look and voila! You're done.

If, like me, you are instead opting to spend your yuletime salary on enough Baileys to sink the titanic, then spa prices just cannot be justified. I like to prep my pins a couple of nights before a big night out. First, run yourself a lovely, deep, hot bath and light a few scented candles. Don't forget to add a decent moisturising soak or oil. 'Lush' do some fab, cheap and cheerful products, my personal favourites are the butterball bath bomb and the chocolate face mask, both guaranteed to leave your skin beautifully soft and moisturised.
After liberally applying a gorgeous face mask (to replenish your skin but also to scare away any children/husbands wandering into the bathroom wanting to disturb your relaxation time), de-fuzz your legs with a new razor blade. Disposables do a great job with winter hairgrowth. Then afterwards, use an exfoliating scrub, preferably with a body brush, to buff away any old cells and give your skin a smooth, firm appearance. I'd highly recommend that you invest in a body brush to exfoliate regularly while washing, you won't believe the good this will do for your skin. These can be picked up at most Boots/Superdrug/Sainsburys etc for under £10.

When you're finished in the bath, slather a generous amount of moisturiser all over yourself, including your face.

TOP TIP:
Here is a little gem of a tip. I have tried many moisturisers promising miracle results over time, but I have found the BEST body moisturiser by far, and best of all it's cheap as chips. Rather then paying through the nose for a wonderous cream which promises to give you the body of a 16 year old, visit the baby aisle in your local supermarket and pick up their own-brand version of baby lotion. Sainsburys charge a couple of quid for a huge bottle, it smells delicious and moisturises like a dream!! Slather on before bed then shower in the morning, and your skin will feel, look and smell fabulous!! Above all, this is unlikely to contain any severe chemical ingredients and so won't damage your skin for a 'quick fix' appearance. xx

If you want to use fake tan, I would advise waiting an hour or two after moisturising to allow the moisturiser to fully absorb. You can then either rinse the moisturiser off (though this won't give you the full benefit) or apply your tan over the top for a lighter, more natural result. I normally apply one layer of tan, a couple of nights before I go out, over my moisturiser. Then I apply another layer, onto clean skin with no moisturiser, the night before I go out. This way, I get an even, well moisturised appearance which doesn't look too over-done. I swear by Fake Bake self tanning mousse. But USE A MITT! These are only a couple of pounds from Superdrug but will make all the difference to your tan. Always try to apply your fake tan in the early evening and sleep in it, then wash it off in the morning. I'll be writing further tanning tips later on, so keep your eye on my blog for some fab tanning tricks.

Finally, on the night of your festive frolics, moisturise or slap some body oil onto your legs about an hour before leaving the house. Then after 10 or 15 minutes apply a layer of wash-off instant tan (about £5 from most Boots/Superdrug type stores. Boots' own brand '17' range is good) with a mitt, for a perfectly tanned pair of pins! This is also a good option if you don't want to use fake tan, but want a little bit of colour just for the night.
Instant tan can be used all over the body and washes straight off, which is handy if you're expected in work the next day and don't want to look like you've commuted straight to the office from Barbados. (Do bear in mind though that a tan makes you look a bit healthier, handy if you're trying to disguise that dreaded office party hangover from the night before...just a thought!)

So now you have perfectly smooth, tanned sexy legs. Time to pop on your tallest killer heels - making sure of course that your pedicure is looking fabulous if they're open toed - and go knock 'em dead!!!

Miles of smiles! x

Ok, so here goes with my first (and possibly most basic but important) entry!!

I decided to name my blog All In The Smile as I do truly believe that a genuine smile is the best accessory that you can ever wear.

It is scientifically proven that smiling releases endorphins which make you feel and look great. Smiling will keep you young, attractive and far less stressed. The happier you are inside, the more it shows on the outside, and vice versa.
I like to remember one of my favourite sayings, which is 'Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die'.

Keep your smile in top condition. Always visit the dentist at least every six months, try to use whitening toothpaste but make sure it's a sensitive version so that it's less abrasive and will do little damage over time.
My favourite is Beverly Hills Formula Sensitive Whitening Expert
http://www.beverlyhillsformula.com/products/sensitive-toothpaste .
This can be left on teeth as a whitening treatment for up to a minute before brushing to achieve it's full potential. (I've included a smiley picture of my pearly whites below so that you can see the results...I've never used/had any whitening treatments etc before.)

Please PLEASE avoid whitening procedures, laser whitening and veneers. These will only damage and make your teeth look unnaturally white, and you will regret it later on in life.

Abide by all of the boring dentist rules where possible, avoiding fizzy drinks where possible or drinking them though a straw, reduce coffee and red wine intake etc.

I'm a self confessed black coffee addict (I have 3 children, a career, home and a husband, coffee is my saviour!) so I also take a toothbrush to work and brush my teeth with whitening toothpaste after lunch, to keep my breath fresh (nothing worse than stinky garlic waft) and keep my teeth white.

I know that this isn't rocket science, it's all stuff that you have heard before, but try thinking of how many times in a day you frown compared to how many times you smile.
Take a few moments as often as possible in each day to concentrate on something or someone that makes you happy. Think of how fortunate you are, and let yourself smile at your thoughts. If you find yourself in a stressful situation then try thinking good thoughts and smile through it. Ugly thoughts make an ugly person.

I'll be back soon with some more in-depth tips and tricks on make-up, hair, tanning etc...meanwhile if you have any tips on getting and maintaining a gorgeous smile please leave a comment!

Happy smiling everyone.
